Washington DC Department of Motor Vehicles Point System

Violating Washington DC driving and traffic laws can result in fines, the suspension of your driving privileges, and even imprisonment. The Washington DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) uses a point system to track violations and their corresponding penalties. Points are added to your driving record if you receive a traffic ticket for moving violations.

[edit] MOVING VIOLATIONS AND POINTS

Different violations are assigned different point values, which are added to your driving record. For instance, tailgating or operating a vehicle with improper license each carry two points. Five-point offences include operating a vehicle with a learner's permit unaccompanied by a licensed driver or failure to give pedestrians right-of-way. The number of points assessed for different speeding violations are as follows:

Exceeding the maximum speed limit by 11-15 mph:3 points

Exceeding the maximum speed limit by 16-20 mph:4 points

Exceeding the maximum speed limit by 21 mph or more: 5 points

[edit] PENALTIES

You will be subject to specific penalties if you accumulate a certain number of points on your driving license:

  1. You will have your license suspended if you accumulate 10 points on your current driving record and will be unable to drive for 90 days.
  2. You will have your license revoked if you accumulate 12 points or more on your current driving record and will be unable to drive until DMV reinstates the license (at least 6 months after revocation).
  3. Accumulating points on your driving license is also likely to increase your auto insurance rates. See our auto insurance section for more information about obtaining quality car insurance at competitive rates.

[edit] HOW TO CLEAR YOUR DRIVING RECORD

The Washington DC DMV maintains a record of all the points added to your driving license. However, there are a number of ways in which you can remove points from your current driving record.
  1. If you remain violation or suspension-free and maintain the validity of your DC driver's license for one year, you can get one good point which will either be maintained or deducted as per your current driving record. Unused safe driving points will expire in 5 years.
  2. Taking a Defensive Driving Course enables you to deduct points from your current driving record, and may also qualify you for a reduction in your car insurance rates.
