How to Handle a Change of Address in Washington DC
If you are a Washington DC resident and have changed addresses or plan to do so in the near future, you must have the address information updated on your driver's license/ identification card, vehicle registration and title certificate. You are also required to notify your insurance provider of your new address.
REPORTING A CHANGE OF ADDRESS TO THE DRIVER LICENSE DIVISION
You must notify the Washington DC Driver License Division of a change in address within five days of moving to a new residence, with a complete proof of residency form. Reporting a change of address to your local driver license office is simple, and can be done in person or via mail. Failure to do so may result in inability to send you the appropriate documents by the DMV and unnecessary fine and inconveniences.

If you are moving out of Washington DC, as a responsible DC resident, you must surrender any tags and registration at any DMV service location. It is advisable not to cancel insurance before surrendering tags to avoid fines.Reporting an address change in person:
- Locate the driver license office nearest you.
- Bring your current license/identification card/registration, along with residency to prove your citizenship or legal presence.
- Bring a complete proof of residency form.
- Pay the fee of $7 for duplicate driver's license/ identification card/registration card, in cash, check, money order or credit card (DMV does not accept American Express).
Reporting an address change by mail:
- Complete proof of residency form along with appropriate documents and mail it to your DMV service location.
- Include the fee of $7, which can be paid through a check or money order.
ADDRESS CHANGE ON YOUR VEHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION
- You must notify the DMV office of a change of address and have this information updated on your Washington DC Vehicle Title and Registration certificate. This must be done within 5 days of moving to a new address, since this will allow you to receive your renewal notice and any other correspondence in a timely fashion.
- You can either report the change of address in person by visiting your local DMV service office, or via mail, and your records will be updated at fee of $7.
NOTIFYING YOUR INSURANCE SERVICE PROVIDER OF AN ADDRESS CHANGE
- You must also notify your insurance provider of your change of address, so that you receive timely information regarding due dates for payments, renewals, and other communication.
- To save time and money, some Florida drivers who change addresses choose to obtain a free quote for new auto insurance instead of changing the address with their current insurance provider. Not only does this save the hassle of contacting and notifying the current insurance company, but it could potentially save hundreds of dollars by identifying companies that offer lower rates and/or better coverage.

- DC DMV does not entertain address change, for the mailing address on a temporary basis and/or P.O. Boxes.
