Illinois Drivers Education

Illinois drivers who are younger than 21 years of age must complete a driver education course. One of two different driving school options is available to drivers, depending on their age: high school drivers ed or adult drivers ed.

Teenage driving school classes are offered at Illinois public and private high schools. The course consists of a 30-hour classroom component and a minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Students who complete the teen driving course will qualify for an IL learners permit. Adult drivers ed online courses may be taken by driver’s license applicants 17 years and 3 months of age and older. The six-hour adult driving course may also be completed in-person in a classroom setting.

Illinois Defensive Driving

The Illinois driver safety program is comprised of two different types of courses: The Remedial Drivers Education Course and the Probationary License Program. Traffic school attendees can qualify for the following privileges if they complete Illinois Traffic Safety School:

  • Reinstating a driver’s license.
  • Point reduction.
  • Insurance premium reduction.
  • Voluntary/personal education.
