Colorado Drivers Education

Colorado teen driving courses must meet certain requirements to qualify a driver for an instruction permit.

The CO DMV requires driver ed for first-time applicants for a minor driving permit. Colorado driver education permit applicants between 15 years and 16 years of age must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction at a state approved in person or online driver ed course. Driving applicants for a driver awareness permit between 15 years and six months and 16 years of age have the option to complete either a 30-hour driver education course or a four-hour driver awareness class. Colorado residents younger than 16 years and six months of age must have completed at least six hours of behind-the-wheel driver training with a private driving instructor prior to applying for a driver’s license.

Colorado Defensive Driving

Colorado DMV approved traffic school courses may be taken by divers for the following reasons:

  • Reinstating a suspended driver’s license.
  • Court ordered.
  • Insurance premium reduction.
  • Voluntary/personal education.

Colorado defensive driving courses are mandated by state traffic courts for the purpose of reinstating a suspended drivers license on a case-by-case basis.
