Every year thousands of Americans set out on adventures to their destinations and it can be crucial that the proper steps be taken in order to make the trip go according to plan. When it comes to the vehicle that you are taking on the trip there are a few steps to take such as first checking the tread life left on your tires and if there is proper tread life to safely complete the amount of miles you plan to travel. If you are unsure then you can always have the tires checked at an inspection station or by a tire installation shop. The next step is to check the tire pressure in all four tires and even in your spare tire. In the event of a flat tire you want to be sure that your spare is properly inflated. It is also important to check the tires for any cracks or irregularities and make sure that you have also all the necessary tools needed to change a spare including jack, jack handle, lug wrench, and if possible some reflector triangles or road flares.

For the cars mechanical components you will want to make sure your brakes can safely and properly stop the vehicle without issue. For the engine it is important to have oil that is still under the recommended usage level and an air filter that is clean as it will maintain power and fuel economy. It can also be important to check the windshield washer fluid levels so in the event of inclement weather you will maintain the ability to properly clean the windshield while driving. Depending on the time of year and the climate of where you will be traveling through will also determine what you will want to bring with you. If the weather will likely be cold then it is important that you bring blankets, candle and a lighter as well as some food and water in the event that your car breaks down and you have to wait for help. If the climate is hot then it is important that you have a supply of drinking water and even sun screen in the event you have to walk to the nearest service station.

It can be beneficial to be a member of and automotive company that offers roadside assistance or you may want to check your insurance or car warranty to make sure that a towing or roadside assistance plan is provided in the event of car trouble. Since not everyone is a “gearhead” means that you may have to rely on the expertise of a certified mechanic in order to provide maintenance. It can be very beneficial at times to carry a flashlight, extra fuses, pressurized tire sealant and/or 12 volt air compressor as well as a multi-tool in order to provide added security in the event of a mechanical or electrical mishap.

These steps will ensure that you are prepared for possible problems during your road trip and if you do not have a cell phone then it can be helpful to purchase a prepaid phone and add contacts for roadside assistance in the event that you need to make a phone call for assistance.
