To receive a Louisiana CDL, or commercial drivers license, drivers are required to submit an application packet to the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) and pass all of the state’s driving exams. The CDL license can be used in Louisiana to operate different types of commercial motor vehicles, or CMVs, depending on the license class and endorsements received by the driver. Drivers must choose between three classes of commercial licenses and apply for endorsements in order to receive permission to transport certain types of goods or large numbers of passengers.

LA drivers can apply for their CDL credentials by submitting the necessary application material in person to a nearby OMV, where they will be required to take the written knowledge exams. If successful, the driver will receive his or her commercial permit, and be able to move forward in the licensing process. All applications must be accompanied by the necessary processing fees to be accepted.

How to Apply for a CDL Permit in Louisiana

Getting CDL permit credentials from the OMV is the first step for all drivers applying for a full commercial operator’s license. The CDL learners permit, also known as a CLP, is required by all drivers so that they have the opportunity to legally practice driving CMVs in the appropriate class under the supervision of an experienced driver before having to sign up for the state’s road skills exam.

To receive the permit, drivers must meet all of the abovementioned requirements and bring the necessary material in person, to the OMV when ready. When submitting the application, the driver will be required to take the vision and knowledge exams.

Once received, drivers must keep the CDL permit for a period of at least 14 days before they can submit a request to take the driving exam and receive the full license. According to CDL permit rules, in Louisiana, drivers can receive some endorsements on their permits to operate certain types of vehicles, like with a full license.

CLPs are valid for 180 days from issuance, and can be extended for another period of 180 days, upon request. The CLP must be converted to a full license within 360 days; otherwise it is no longer valid.
