Iowa Drivers License Test Rules and Requirements

How to Schedule a Drivers License Test in Iowa

You do not need to schedule an Iowa DMV driving test appointment when applying for your permit, though you will need one when you apply for your license. Because you cannot schedule a test for your permit, you may be required to wait at the DMV in order to take your exam.

What to Bring to a Driving Test in Iowa

Once you are able to correctly answer all of the Iowa DMV driving test questions on our practice test, you will be ready for your exam. However, you will need to bring the following before you are allowed to take your test:

  • Glasses or contacts, if you need them to see with a minimum of 20/40 vision.
  • One proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, passport, Certificate of Citizenship or Certificate of Birth Abroad. This document needs to show both your age and your identity.
  • One proof of your Social Security Number, such as an SSN card, paystub, W-2 or 1099.
  • Two proofs of your address, such as bank correspondence, a voter registration card or a utility bill.
  • Payment for your permit/license and testing. Offices throughout the state accept cash, checks, Mastercard, Visa debit cards and Discover credit cards.

For the road exam, you will need to bring a working vehicle to the testing location. If your test proctor judges your vehicle unsuitable for driving, you will be turned away. You will then need to fix your vehicle or find another one to take the test in before rescheduling your appointment.

Iowa DMV Driving Test Fees

Fees for DMV driving exams in Iowa vary depending on the type of credential you are trying to get. Below are the prices for common license and permit types in Iowa:

  • An instruction permit costs $6.
  • A driver’s license costs $4 for every year that it is valid.
  • Retaking the permit or driver’s exam costs $1.50
