What is the minimum liability insurance coverage?
The minimum liability requirements in New Jersey are as follows:
  • $5,000 per accident for damage to someone else’s car or property
  • $15,000 per person per accident for personal injury protection (PIP) benefits, and
  • $250,000 per person per accident in PIP benefits for certain serious injuries.

Bodily injury liability (BDL) insurance is not included in the Basic Policy, although, it is still offered as an option. In addition, this insurance does not cover injuries to someone who is not in the car with you in the event of an accident.

What proof of insurance can I provide when registering my car?
Once you get car insurance in New Jersey, you will be issued a New Jersey insurance identification card for each vehicle on your policy. This card contains the name of your insurance company, the policy number and expiration date in addition to your vehicle description and your personal details.

You must present your New Jersey insurance ID card when registering your vehicle for the first time. If your Insurance ID card is not in your possession, you can provide the NJ MVC with the name of the car insurance company and policy number instead.
