Learner's Permits for Beginner Drivers in Wyoming

Obtaining an instruction permit is generally the first step that a beginner driver takes toward becoming a fully licensed driver in Wyoming. You are eligible to apply for an instruction permit if you are at least 15 years old and:

  • you have never been licensed to operate a vehicle, or
  • you are a new resident of Wyoming who has been licensed in another state, but your driver's license has been expired for longer than six months

Note: A Restricted Instruction Permit can be issued to applicants 14-15 years of age in exceptional cases. This permit is valid for 60 days and is issued to applicants who need to get a restricted drivers license because of an extreme inconvenience in their household.

The restricted driver's license can only be used within a 50 mile radius of the licensee's residence and only between 5 am and 8 pm. For more information on restricted licenses, click here.

[edit] HOW TO OBTAIN AN ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION PERMIT

  1. Download a copy of the Wyoming Driver's Manual, or get a hard copy by visiting a local DOT exam station.
  2. If you are under 18 years of age, your parent or guardian must sign the minor's release portion of the application.
  3. Visit your local DOT exam station to submit the application. You must bring with you:
  4. Acceptable proof of identity. If you have changed your name, you must bring documents that support and clearly indicate your current name.
  5. Your Social Security card.
  6. The permit fee amount of $20.
  7. You will be given a written knowledge test and an eye screening at the Driver License Center. If you pass these tests, you will be issued an instruction permit, which is valid for one year. An instruction permit may be renewed for an additional one year at a cost of $20.
When driving with an instruction permit you must be accompanied by a licensed driver age of 18 or older. This person must sit beside you.

  4. You pass the driving skills test.

  3. All occupants must wear seat belts.
The intermediate license expires 30 days after the licensee turns 17.

[edit] THE UNRESTRICTED LICENSE

  2. Your driving privileges are not suspended.
  3. You have successfully completed a driver training course approved by the Wyoming Department of Education.
