How to Handle a Change of Address in Washington

If you are a Washington resident and have changed addresses or plan to do so in the near future, you must have the address information updated on your license, Enhanced Driver's License or Enhanced Identification Card, vehicle registration and title certificate. You are also required to notify your insurance provider of your new address.

REPORTING A CHANGE OF ADDRESS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF LICENSING

You must notify the Washington Department of Licensing Driver's Licensing Office of a change in address within 10 days of moving to a new residence, and to obtain a replacement driver license. Reporting a change of address to your local driver license office is simple, and can be done in person, via mail or telephone. If you are a commercial license holder, apply in person at your local driver license office.

Reporting an address change in person:

  1. Locate the driver license office nearest you.
  2. Bring your current license, along with primary documents as identification to prove your citizenship or legal presence.
  3. Pay a fee of $10, in cash, check, or money order in case you need a new license along with the address change.
  4. If you hold an Enhanced Driver's License or Enhanced ID, you need to contact the EDL/ID office near you and provide with the current EDL/ID, along with the documents which are required for a change of address for normal driver's license and proof of residence, and a $ 10 in case you need a new EDL/ID. You need to surrender the old EDL/ID in this case.

Reporting an address change by mail:

Complete the change of address form and mail it to: Driver Responsibility, Department of Licensing,
PO Box 9030,
Olympia WA 98507-9030
You need to make a note of the new address at the back of your driver's license or ID card.

Reporting an address change by telephone:

  1. Call 1- (360) 902-3900 to update information via telephone. Along with this you can also update information on your voter registration.

ADDRESS CHANGE ON YOUR VEHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION

  1. You need to provide your primary, valid address of residence on your Washington vehicle registration according to the State law, unless you are homeless and do not have to pay motor vehicle excise tax or other relevant fees. This must be done within 10 days of moving to a new address.
  2. You can either report the change of address in person by visiting your local vehicle licensing office, or online, and your records will be updated at no charge.

NOTIFYING YOUR INSURANCE SERVICE PROVIDER OF AN ADDRESS CHANGE

  1. You must also notify your auto insurance provider of your change of address, so that you receive timely information regarding due dates for payments, renewals, and other communication.
