How to Renew a Driver's License in Vermont

A Vermont Driver's License can be renewed either in person at any DMV Office in the State, or by mail.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE

  1. Your Vermont driver's license has a validity of two or four years and will generally expire on your birthday. The expiration year depends on your age when the expiring license was issued or last renewed.
  2. The Vermont DMV will send you a renewal application about a month prior to expiration.
  3. You have a grace period of 14 days to renew your license after expiration. After that your driving privileges expire and it is illegal for you to drive in Vermont.

If your license expired more than three years ago, you have to take the tests again to get a license.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  1. The completed and signed renewal application. (If you did not receive renewal application, you need to complete a driver license application form, available online or at a DMV Office)
  2. Two forms of identification.
  3. Renewal fee of $40 for a 4 year license and $25 for 2 years.
  4. If your name has changed, documentation of the name change is required.

If you want to have a photo license and your last license photo was taken before January 5, 2004 you must apply in person at a DMV office.

TO RENEW BY MAIL

The renewal can be completed by mail, but the subsequent renewal should be done at a driver exam station.

To renew by mail just send the completed renewal application along with the fee ($40 for a 4 year license and $25 for 2 years) to:

Vermont Department of Transportation

Montpelier,

VT 05603-0001

The renewed driver's license will arrive by mail.
