How to Renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Vermont

Renewing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Vermont is a relatively simple process compared to applying for a new CDL.

PROCEDURES FOR RENEWING YOUR COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE

  1. A renewal notice will be sent to you, one month before your CDL is due to expire. If your CDL has been lost or stolen, you will need to apply for a replacement CDL, rather than a renewal.
  2. You must renew your CDL in person, at your local DMV branch office, along with your current photo for which there will be an extra fee.
  3. Fill out the renewal notice, bring a signed copy to your local DMV branch office and take the required tests.
  4. Bring your current Vermont commercial driver's license or 2 different forms of identification. You have the choice to add endorsements or upgrade your license class.
  5. You must also bring the correct CDL this page. Fees vary, depending on the endorsements on your CDL. Check with your local DMV branch office on the exact fee before arriving for the renewal.

HAZARDOUS MATERIAL ENDORSEMENT (HAZMAT)

If your CDL includes a Hazardous Material Endorsement that you wish to retain, you must pass a hazardous material knowledge test. If you do not pass the test, you can renew your CDL without the hazardous material endorsement and add the endorsement once you pass the test. You are not permitted to transport hazardous material without the endorsement. The test can be scheduled by calling 808-828-2085. The background and fingerprint check is administered by the Transportation Security Administration.
  1. You must pay a non-refundable fee of $89.25 through credit card or money order to initiate the process. Call the Integrated Biometrics Technologies (IBT) Help Desk at 1-877-429-7746, or visit their website at www.hazprints.com.
  2. Contact one of the locations listed on the IBT site to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.
  3. The application for the endorsement renewal must be filled out either online or through the telephone through an IBT Driver Service Center before you come to get your fingerprints taken.
  4. Applicants need to bring two kinds of identification before they are fingerprinted. For acceptable forms of ID, please refer to www.hazprints.com.
  5. An approval letter will be mailed to you from the TSA, indicating that you have successfully completed the background check. A letter will also be sent directly to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles.
  6. Bring the TSA approval letter to your local DMV office to add the HAZMAT endorsement on your renewed CDL.
