How to Handle a Change of Address in South Carolina
If you are a South Carolina resident and have changed addresses or plan to do so in the near future, you must have the address information updated on your license, vehicle registration and title certificate. You are also required to notify your insurance provider of your new address.
REPORTING A CHANGE OF ADDRESS TO THE DRIVER LICENSE DIVISION
You must notify the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of a change in address within 10 days of moving to a new residence, and to obtain a replacement driver license. Reporting a change of address to your local driver license office is simple, and can be done in person, via mail, or online.
Reporting an address change in person:
- Locate the driver license office nearest you.
- Bring your current license, and application form along with proper identification to prove your citizenship or legal presence.
- Pay the fee of $10, in cash, credit or debit card or check payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Reporting an address change by mail:
- Complete the application form.
- Include the fee of $10, which can be paid through a check payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Reporting an address change via the Internet:
- You can report a change of address online by visiting DMV's Public Services website and following the instructions carefully for change of address.
- You can then apply online for a duplicate license with your new address.
- For $12.50 you can renew your driver's license if it is close to expiration.
- You can make the payment by credit or debit card.
ADDRESS CHANGE ON YOUR VEHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION
- You must notify your DMV Office of a change of address and have this information updated on your South Carolina Vehicle Title and Registration certificate. This must be done within 10 days of moving to a new address, since this will allow you to receive your renewal notice and any other correspondence in a timely fashion. When you change your address with DMV, all your related vehicle and driver documents will be updated.
- You can either report the change of address in person by visiting your local DMV office, or via mail, and your records will be updated. You must submit the change of address form to reflect the change of address. You can also choose to report the change of address online (if you live in certain select counties) at the Public Service website for a small service fee. All major credit cards are accepted.
- When you make address changes, you do not receive any title credential until you pay the following fee, although all your records will be updated at no extra charges: For Vehicle Title pay $15.00 and submit the Certificate of Title form along with the application form. For vehicle registration, there is no extra fee; you can submit the change of address form only.
NOTIFYING YOUR INSURANCE SERVICE PROVIDER OF AN ADDRESS CHANGE
- You must also notify your insurance provider of your change of address, so that you receive timely information regarding due dates for payments, renewals, and other communication.
- To save time and money, some South Carolina drivers who change addresses choose to obtain a free quote for new auto insurance instead of changing the address with their current insurance provider. Not only does this save the hassle of contacting and notifying the current insurance company, but it could potentially save hundreds of dollars by identifying companies that offer lower rates and/or better coverage.
- If you are a non-US citizen residing in South Carolina, and wish to have your address updated on your license, you can only have this done at certain select DMV Offices. You should also provide evidence that the US Department of Justice, Immigration services or Homeland Security has authorized you to study, work or live in the United States. The Customer checklist form lists all documentation requirements to meet the above immigration categories. If all required documentation is provided, then you will receive a credential valid for 60 days that enables you to drive your vehicle while your documents are verified. You must, however, carry your original documents with you at all times. After verification, DMV will mail you a valid photo credential valid until your authorized period of stay.
