Learner's Permits for Beginner Drivers in Oklahoma

Obtaining a learner's permit is generally the first step that a beginner driver takes toward becoming a fully licensed driver in Oklahoma. You are eligible to apply for a learner's permit if you are at least 15 years and six months old and:

  • you have never been licensed to operate a vehicle, or
  • you are a new resident of Oklahoma who has been licensed in another state, but your driver's license has been expired for longer than six months

Though you become eligible for a learner's permit when you turn 15 and ½, you can start driver training when you are 15 and drive while receiving instruction from and accompanied by a certified driver education instructor. Bear in mind that if you did not undertake a driver's education course, you need to be 16 in order to apply for a learner's permit.

HOW TO OBTAIN AN ORIGINAL LEARNER'S PERMIT

  1. Download a copy of the Oklahoma Driver's Manual or get a hard copy by visiting your local driver exam station.
    1. If you are under 18 years of age, you must obtain a parental consent form (all forms must be obtained at the exam station itself) and have it completed and signed by your parent or guardian.
    2. Visit your local Driver Exam Station to submit the application. You must bring with you:
  2. Primary and secondary proof of identity. If you have changed your name, you must bring documents that support and clearly indicate your current name.
  3. Your Social Security card.
  4. The $25.50 fee.
  5. If you're under the age of 16, proof of enrolment in a driver's education course approved by the state might be required.
    1. You will be given a written knowledge test and an eye screening at the Driver Exam Station. If you pass these tests, you will be issued a learner's permit.
When driving with a learner's permit you must be accompanied by a licensed driver age of 21 or older. This person must sit beside you.

THE Intermediate License

You must wait at least six months after being issued your learner's permit, and complete a minimum of 40 hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience (under direct supervision of an experienced adult driver, 21 years old or older with at least two years of driving experience) and have had no incidents or traffic violations before taking the driver's license road test. If you pass the road test, you will be issued an intermediate license. The intermediate license in Oklahoma includes the following restrictions:
  1. You can only drive between 5am to 11pm, except for activities related to school, church, or work.
  2. You can only be accompanied by one person who is not of your own household; there is no restriction on the number of passengers from your own household. The exception to this rule is if you are if accompanied by licensed driver at least 21 years old.

The Unrestricted License

A full, unrestricted license may be issued when you are at least 18 years old. An intermediate license may be changed to a regular, non-commercial driver's license, provided you meet all of the following requirements:
  1. You have had the intermediate license for 6 months if you have completed an approved driver's education course, or held the intermediate license for one year without a course.
  2. You have not had any traffic violations in that period, and have an unblemished driving record.
