How to Renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in New Jersey
Renewing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in New Jersey is a relatively simple process compared to applying for a new CDL.
PROCEDURES FOR RENEWING YOUR COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE
- You will receive a renewal notice from the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) within 5-7 weeks of your license expiration date. Make sure that the MVC has your latest address and that you report any change of address immediately.
- Renewal has to be done every four years in person at a local MVC office.
- Bring the following items with you to the local MVC office, when renewing your commercial driver's license:
- Your current CDL
- Proof of identity (MVC requires you to pass a 6 Point ID Verification)
- You must also bring the correct CDL renewal fee. Fees vary, depending on your age and the endorsements on your CDL. Check with your local MVC office on the exact fee before arriving for the renewal.
HAZARDOUS MATERIAL ENDORSEMENT (HAZMAT)
If your CDL includes a Hazardous Material Endorsement that you wish to retain, you must undergo a fingerprint and background check by the Transportation Security Administration for every renewal. You might also need to take the HAZMAT endorsement written test. Endorsements are valid for four years, and must be renewed at least 45 days before expiration.- You must pay a non-refundable fee of $89.25 to initiate the process. Call the Integrated Biometrics Technologies (IBT) Help Desk at 1-877-429-7746, or visit their website at www.hazprints.com.
- Contact one of the locations listed on the IBT site to schedule a fingerprinting appointment. To renew a HAZMAT endorsement, you must go through the fingerprinting process at least 45 days before the CDL expires. Fingerprinting fees should be paid directly to IBT.
- Complete an application from TSA and submit your fingerprints.
- Bring your commercial driver's license and social security card to the IBT office on the scheduled date.
- TSA will notify New Jersey when you have successfully completed the background check. You will be issued a HAZMAT endorsement if your background check is successful.
- If you receive an endorsement, you must comply with MVC's 6 Point ID Verification Program.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- If adding endorsements to your CDL, additional testing may be required. Check for the MVC testing locations where you can schedule an appointment.
- If you do not renew your CDL within three years of expiration, you will be required to apply for a new CDL. Refer to the CDL manual for further details.
- You are required to carry a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate with you at all times when on the road. This is a regulation mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The certificate must be renewed every two years and requires that you go through a physical examination. The form is available online.
