How to Handle a Change of Address in North Carolina

If you are a North Carolina resident and have changed addresses or plan to do so in the near future, you must have the address information updated on your license, vehicle registration and title certificate. You are also required to notify your insurance provider of your new address.

You must notify the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles of a change in address within 60 days of moving to a new residence, and to obtain a replacement driver license. Reporting a change of address to your local driver license office is simple, and can be done in person or online.

Reporting an address change in person:

  1. Locate the driver license office nearest you. Fill out the change of address form.
  2. Bring your current license, along with proper identification to prove your citizenship or legal presence.
  3. Pay the fee of $10.
  4. When you visit the office in person you can also make any major changes in your personal information or update your class of license or add endorsements.
  5. The new license will be mailed to you.

Reporting an address change by mail:

  1. Download and complete the change of address form and mail it to the following address:
    NC Division of Motor Vehicles
    3148 Mail Service Center
    Raleigh, NC 27699-3148
  2. Include the fee of $10.
  3. The new license will be mailed to you.

Reporting an address change via the Internet:

  1. You can report a change of address online by visiting the DMV site and follow the instructions carefully.
  2. Pay the fee of $10.
  3. The new license will be mailed to you.

  1. You can change the address on your vehicle title and registration by downloading the Change of Address form and following instructions carefully. This must be done within 60 days of moving to a new address, since this will allow you to receive your renewal notice and any other correspondence in a timely fashion.
  2. Fee to Change the Address on Your Vehicle Registration: $0

  1. You must also notify your insurance provider of your change of address, so that you receive timely information regarding due dates for payments, renewals, and other communication.
  2. To save time and money, some North Carolina drivers who change addresses choose to obtain a free quote for new auto insurance instead of changing the address with their current insurance provider. Not only does this save the hassle of contacting and notifying the current insurance company, but it could potentially save hundreds of dollars by identifying companies that offer lower rates and/or better coverage.

Reviews of How to Handle a Change of Address in North Carolina

I just need to apply to change my address so that my college won't charge me out of state tuition. Even though I've lived in Mooresville since I was three years old. This site is 10/10 unhelpful. It's almost seems as rude as the people that actually work in the DMV.

This is the DUMBEST SITE in the WORLD! I came here looking for how to change my address. It gives a link to the DMVsite and says to follow the instructions carefully. THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS! It takes you in a circle!

I'm having the exact same problem, they should spend less time on all these advertisements and make the site more useful! Does anyone know how to change your address online?
