Traffic/Driving Schools in Maine

[edit] TRAFFIC SCHOOLS

Traffic schools and clinics are designed to help you to learn defensive driving techniques that will make you a safer driver. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety offers a driver improvement course called Maine Driving Dynamics Course.

Apart from giving you an in-depth understanding of the laws, the five hour course discusses collision avoidance techniques, driver habits and attitudes and safety issues. Anyone who completes the course will get a three point credit on their driving record.

There are various other Bureau of Highway Safety approved courses being offered in Maine and some of them are even offered online. Contact the BMV for a list of approved courses. If the clinic has been court-ordered, please ensure that the court will accept a certificate of completion from an online course, before enrolling in a computer based one.

[edit] BENEFITS

Any driver can enroll in a driver improvement clinic at any time to receive the following benefits:

  • Safe Driving Points - you will receive a 3 point reduction on your driving record if you complete an approved safe driving course.
  • You may be able to dismiss traffic tickets or reduce court imposed fines by completing a safe driving course. Contact your local BMV office to know if this is an option for your offence.
  • Insurance Benefits - some insurance companies may offer premium discounts. Please check with your insurance representative to see if you qualify for this discount.

[edit] WHEN IS IT MANDATORY?

Either the court or the BMV (when notified by the courts) may order you to successfully complete a driver improvement program when you have been convicted of a moving or traffic violation. It is under the court's discretion as to whether or not you will be mandated to take one of these clinics.

[edit] FEES

The fee for the driving dynamics course is $40 if you are under 65 years of age and $10 if you are over age 65. Visit the Maine Driving Dynamics Course website for a course schedule. Contact the individual course providers for the pricing of their courses.
