Louisiana Drivers Education

Drivers ed in Louisiana is required of all driver’s license applicants, regardless of age. Applicants who are 15 to 17 years of age must complete a teen driving school course consisting of 30 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training. Adults 18 years of age and older have the choice to attend adult driving school with the same 38-hour requirement as minor applicants, or take the six-hour LA DPS&C pre-licensing classroom course.

Louisiana Defensive Driving

Drivers attend traffic school in Louisiana for one of the following reasons:

  • Court ordered for traffic ticket dismissal.
  • Insurance premium reduction.
  • Voluntary/personal education.

Louisiana does not offer a state-wide defensive driving program. Instead eligibility for taking traffic school courses are decided within each parish. Certain district courts allow drivers to participate in an online Pretrial Traffic Diversion Program. Participation in the program allows drivers to dismiss a traffic ticket by taking an approved online traffic school course.
