How to Renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Florida

In Florida, CDL renewal only takes place in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles office. The options to renew CDLs online, by mail or over the phone are unavailable in Florida.

To renew almost-expired CDLs or expired CDLs, Florida CDL drivers are required to:

  1. Make an appointment at a nearby driving license office.
  2. You will be asked to pass a vision exam with at least 20/40 results.
  3. You may be required to take another medical exam for commercial drivers license renewal.
  4. If you have a Hazmat endorsement (CDL X endorsement or CDL H endorsement) you are required to retake and pass the hazardous materials test.
  5. Bring the following proofs of identification
    • Proof of Identity
      • Valid FL CDL license
      • FL drivers license
      • U.S. passport
      • U.S. military card
    • Proof of age
      • Birth certificate
      • U.S. passport
    • Proof of Social Security Number
      • Social Security card
      • W-2
      • 1099
    • Two proofs of residency (must be dated within the past 60 days)
      • Utilities bills
      • Bank statements
      • School report card
      • Magazine subscriptions
  6. Pass the background check. Order a background check prior to know what's on your record.
  7. Pay the renewal fees with accepted form of payment:
    • Cash
    • Check
    • Money order
    • Visa
    • MasterCard
    • American Express
    • Discover

Iam approching my 69 birthday and may decide to downgrade my CDL to a regular drivers licence since iam not longer plan to drive Tractor Trailer's , do i have to go in person to do this or could a regular drivers licence be mail to me , Iam a safe driver now , Thank's for your answer, Eddie.
