How to Renew a Driver's License in Delaware
A Delaware Driver's License can be renewed in person at any Division of Motor Vehicle (DMV) office in the State.
WHEN TO RENEW YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE
- Your Delaware driver's license is issued for five years and will generally expire during the month of your birthday. The expiration year depends on when the expiring license was issued or last renewed.
- It is advisable to renew your driver's license before the birthday on which it will expire. You can renew your license any time in the three months leading up to its expiration. The DMV will send you a reminder for renewal 60 days prior to the expiration date.
- Your driving privileges expire on the midnight of your birthday if you do not renew.
TO RENEW IN PERSON
You must bring:
- Your expiring license or Proof of Identity if the expiring license is not available
- If your name has changed, documentation of the name change is required.
Renewal fee of $25.00, payable by cash, check or credit card. A late fee of $1.15 is charged for renewals after the expiration date. Detailed information for various fees is available here.
- You must return your expired license, complete an application and pass a vision screening test. The minimum vision requirement is 20/40. Road tests and written tests may be given.
