How to Renew a Driver's License in Washington DC

A Washington DC Driver's License can be renewed either in person at any DMV service location in the State or online.

WHEN TO RENEW YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE

  1. Your DC driver's license is valid for five years.
  2. You will get a renewal notice 60 days prior to the expiration date.
  3. Make sure to renew your DC driver's license on time because if you wait 90 days after expiration to renew, then you have to take the written test. If you renew 180 days after expiration, you have to take the written test as well as the road test.

TO RENEW IN PERSON

You must bring:

  1. Your expiring DC Driver's license or if it is not available, proof of name and date of birth and SSN.
  2. A completed and signed Driver's License and Voter's Registration form.
  3. If your name or address has changed, documentation of name change and address change is required.
  4. Renewal fee of $39 payable by cash, money order or credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Discover only).

TO RENEW ONLINE

You can renew online if your driver's license has a digital photograph and signature (issued since August 2000) and if you meet the other online requirements.

To renew online you need:

  1. Your driver's license number and the control number from your renewal notice. (If you don't have it then you need to provide your first name, last name, date of birth and your Social Security number)
  2. A valid credit card to make the payment (Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards only).

The new driver's license will arrive by mail to the address on record within 10 days.

Note: You cannot renew online if you renewed online the last time and you cannot change your name or address online. In such cases you have to renew in person with original documents at a DMV service location.
