When you are buying a car for your teen kid, there are several factors you have to take into consideration. The car has to be reliable with good safety features, fuel efficient, and preferably not too expensive.

One of the most suitable cars for young drivers is the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. It’s a 4-door mid-size sedan, with a 4-cylinder 2.4-liter engine with 198 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. With a very comfortable and roomy interior, the Sonata has very good handling, excellent fuel economy with 22 mpg for city driving and 35 mpg/highway. It has a lot of safety features, including 4-wheel ABS, front and rear head airbags, emergency braking assist, anti-theft alarm system, traction control and driver head restraint whiplash protection system. Plus, you can get for a pretty reasonable price of about $20,300.

An even more affordable car suitable for young drivers is the Mazda 3 five-door hatchback, with an $18,000 price tag. It comes with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to fuel consumption, you will be getting 39 mpg/highway and 28 mpg/city. It is also very safe, with dual front and side curtain airbags, traction and stability control, ABS and Blind Spot Monitoring System.

The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is another car that is perfect for young drivers. It has a 2.4-liter Inline 4 engine, with 169 horsepower and 160 lb-ft of torque. The fuel efficiency is similar with the aforementioned cars, at 22/30 mpg for city/highway driving, but it’s cheaper, with an asking price of only $10,800. The Malibu also has excellent handling, and comfortable interior, and good crash test ratings. Standard safety features include 4-wheel ABS, dual front airbags, traction control, post-collision safety system, anti-lock brakes, seat-mounted thorax airbags, along with hands-free calling.

Besides the features noted above, car insurance is also a very important factor, since young drivers are more likely to get involved in car accidents, and it can be a huge expense, so it’s advisable to purchase a vehicle with lower insurance costs.
