Alabama Department of Public Safety Point System

The Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) uses a point system to track violations and their corresponding penalties. MOVING VIOLATIONS AND POINTS
Different violations are assigned different point values, which are added to your driving record. For instance, all moving violations like driving on the wrong side of the road and illegal passing carry four points. Five-point offenses include failure to yield right-of-way and passing a stopped school bus. The number of points assessed for different speeding violations are as follows:
Exceeding posted speed limit:2 points Exceeding 85 mph:5 points

PENALTIES
You will be subject to specific penalties if you accumulate a certain number of points on your driving license:
- You will have your license suspended if you accumulate 12 points or more on your current driving record, in a two-year span. A notice of scheduled suspension will be mailed to you. The length of suspension depends on the number of points accumulated as seen here.

HOW TO CLEAR YOUR DRIVING RECORD
The Alabama DPS maintains a record of all the points added to your driving license.
