How to Renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Alaska

An Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) cannot be renewed on mail as the system is being digitized. Hence, you must visit your local DMV office to complete the renewal process. Renewal is valid for five years.

PROCEDURES FOR RENEWING YOUR COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE

  1. Your Alaska CDL can be renewed anytime after your birthday in the year before its expiration date. If your CDL has been lost or stolen, you will need to apply for a replacement CDL, rather than a renewal.
  2. You must renew your CDL in person, at your local DMV office.
  3. At the local DMV office, when renewing your commercial driver's license, you will need to :
  4. Bring your current Alaska commercial driver's license.
  5. Take a current photograph.
  6. Pass the vision test.
  7. Pay the CDL renewal fee of $100.

HAZARDOUS MATERIAL ENDORSEMENT (HAZMAT)

If your CDL includes a Hazardous Material Endorsement that you wish to retain, you must undergo a fingerprint and background check by the Transportation Security Administration. Cost for fingerprinting and background check will be $89.25. If you go to www.hazprints.com and complete an application prior to visiting the print location, you can pay by credit card. If you state that you will be paying by money order or cash, you will not be able to pay by credit card at the print location.
  1. You must pay a non-refundable fee of $89.25 to initiate the process. Call the Integrated Biometrics Technologies (IBT) Help Desk at 1-877-429-7746, or visit their website at www.hazprints.com.
  2. Contact one of the locations listed on the IBT site to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.
  3. Bring your commercial driver's license and social security card to the IBT office on the scheduled date.
  4. An approval letter will be mailed to you from the TSA, indicating that you have successfully completed the background check.
  5. Bring the TSA approval letter to your local DMV office to add the HAZMAT endorsement on your renewed CDL.

Reviews of How to Renew a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Alaska

I just compleated a background TSA check and fingerprint for a TWIC card. Do I really have to do this again? I know that the TWIC background check will take a recent Hasmat background check from the Alaska DMV.

How long does the background check take? The TWIC took I week with the Electronic fingerprint.
